“When you get the choice to sit it out or dance…I hope you dance…”
I’ve heard the song I Hope You Dance, by Lee Ann Womack several times. Most recently while watching a movie, then again while sitting in Applebees, and a few days later it was referenced while I was reading Oprah’s What I Know For Sure. So, finally I decided to listen to the song carefully and read the lyrics as well (since the chorus was all I knew).
I instantly fell in love with the song, along with the message I walked away with each time I listen. What’s crazy–is that it reminded me of a conversation I had with my coworker Sophia. Often times as journalist, we immediately start watching the clock and planning our next move. Again, there is never anything wrong with plans! However, while doing this we often forget to simply enjoy the moment. Make no mistake–this post is not only for journalists…but that’s the perspective that made me open my eyes and reconsider how I was starting to look at things.
With that being said…it’s so easy for your peace of mind to be disturbed in the midst of frustration… So here are a few things to consider with helpful reminders from the song…
“May you never take one single breath for granted…”
“I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance…”
“More doors will probably close for you, than the number of doors that open…”
So much truth lies within that statement…but don’t give up while knocking on doors or as you wait! Honestly, you’re probably so focused on the doors that close…you miss the one that opens. Although doors won’t always open on your time, be thankful for each one you’re allowed to enter. Even when they aren’t what you expected– give it all you’ve got.
“And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance…I hope you dance…”
The message here is simple: Be grateful, enjoy the moment you’re in, and dance as hard as you can! Even when you’re frustrated and have the option to sit it out… I hope you make the choice to dance.
I challenge you to put your tiny frustrations aside, listen to the song and reflect on how you’ll dance to enjoy the moment…
